Right on cue, for the third year in a row, the unfavourable weather pattern has added true meaning to the word‘Challenge’ for the competitors in the 28th Tea Tree Snapper / Victorian Amateur Snapper Championships. Fishing out of 845 boats, the 2109 competitor field, including 236 juniors were greeted and treated with 30-40 knot Northerlies and seas to 2metres on the Friday. From the early start at 5 am on the Friday, a couple of hours were gleaned by the smaller craft before rough seas prevailed. The predicted thunderstorm late in the evening did flatten the seas to some extent allowing the keenest and rain soaked to fish on into the night. Early Saturday gave a last effort for the small craft, before again 30-40kn West Sou- westerly winds whipped another round of 1.5 -2 metre seas on the playground. Traditionally, the heaviest snapper have come from Western Port, often from well researched areas and experienced anglers. The heaviest specimen of 10.51kg was caught by Mark Sullivan of Tyabb at 8am on Friday in Western Port. Heaviest junior section was won by Jessica Tilley from Cranbourne with a fish of 5.90 kg. The major boat a 4.2 Quintrex ‘ Escape’ from JV Marine , one of three boat packages on offer, was won by Nick Frame of Rosebud.
A positive, happy ,yet anxious ,crowd of more than 3000 people gathered at Mornington Racecourse on Saturday afternoon in sunny conditions, in anticipation of how they or their connections might feature in the $130,000 prize pool on offer.
The Club thanks their sponsors for the regular generous input and the competitors for their support.
